What’s not to love about summer? Kids are off school, the sun stays out later, family trips are taken, neighborhoods are abuzz, and people just seem happier. But amidst the fun, summer brings an increased threat of home burglaries. Studies show break-ins are most commonly reported during July and August. To help you take your home security into your own hands, here are four reasons to heighten your home security this season so you can fully enjoy the summer fun:
Burglars Love Open Windows
Windows are the preferred home break in entry point in warmer months. Warmer temperatures mean more open windows and open or unlocked windows make your home an easy target for burglars. A window is even less conspicuous than breaking and entering through a door.
Daylight Home Break-Ins
Contrary to popular belief, your home is most at risk to be robbed during broad daylight. According to the FBI, 65% of all home burglaries occur between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. More specifically, most of those burglaries occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when people are more likely to be at work or school. During summer break, kids may be at home during this window—an added safety consideration for the summer months.
Thieves Target Single-Family Homes
The type of home you live in could also increase your chance of a break-in. Single-family, detached homes are at a higher risk of burglary than multi-family homes, attached or semi-attached houses, and apartments. They are often more accessible and provide an easier target than other dwelling types due to their multiple entry points. Additionally, if your home is near an area of heavy traffic, burglars have the advantage of anonymity and can easily blend in without neighbors noticing.
Burglaries During Family Vacation Time
Summer is a prime time for family vacations. Of course, this may also mean leaving your home vacant for days on end, making it a target for burglary. Be sure to take precautions before leaving town such as notifying a trusted neighbor of your absence and double checking that all windows and doors are locked. You can also make it look like someone is home by leaving a light on, a parked car in the driveway, and even cancelling mail delivery so that your box doesn’t overflow (or make sure that same trusted neighbor is grabbing your mail for you). It’s also a great time to consider a home security system. A study by the University of North Carolina found that 60% of burglars surveyed indicated that “the presence of an alarm would cause them to seek an alternative target altogether.”
Between all the fun things in your busy schedule, don’t forget to secure your home so you can truly enjoy the carefree spirit of summer!
